I wrote an article and a quick tutorial for faking 3d in 2d illustration for Digital Creative Arts (issue 14), including some basic perspective, texturing, lighting and atmospheric perspective – check it out. It would probably be old news to artists from a traditional drawing background… but a lot of young up-and-coming artists that are still doodling and playing around with Photoshop might get some useful tips.
This cell-shading technique is slowly gaining in popularity – actually quickly gaining in popularity with the introduction of cell-shading style 3d rendering engines. I wouldn’t be surprised to see it become another design style staple… I caught one particular cell-shaded style Starbucks commercial put out by Psyop.
